Multiple students were just injured after shooter opens fire in Maryland high school

- Maret 20, 2018

Another shooting has rocked an American high school, this time in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. Three people were injured at Great Mills High School, including the gunman, when a student entered the building and opened fire, CNN reports.

The victims are currently in critical condition, but the situation has since been contained. Luckily, a school resource officer was able to quickly respond, engage, and overwhelm the shooter. The gunman has since succumbed to his wounds and died.

The incident comes amidst increased attention on the gun question in the United States, driven by the outspoken activism of the Parkland mass shooting survivors. 17 people were murdered in cold blood when a young man armed with an AR-15 style assault rifle entered their school and commenced his rampage. The Parkland students have been calling for meaningful action from Congress, and bravely confronting the Republican Party and its calculating, callous NRA donors.

While the Great Mills shooting was stopped by the resource officer, too often this is not the case. It’s not enough to simply rely on the heroism of individuals when children’s lives are on the line. Armed guards will not always be able to respond in time, and they won’t always have the courage in the moment to put themselves in mortal danger – as we saw in Parkland, when the armed security guard elected to stay outside rather than confront a killer with a deadly rifle. More sweeping protections are desperately needed.

Congress must pass legislation to limit the spread of assault-style rifles and institute more stringent background checks. Until such action is taken, school shootings will continue to terrorize our children and plague our schools. Enough is enough.
