Monday sees a new month and new shade cast at the president from another U.S. ally enraged at Trump’s trade war. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte pushed back against President Trump‘s tariffs against European goods, saying they were “not positive.”
In a world connected by the internet, it’s fairly commonplace for comments such as these to have arrived passively, by vehicle of of a tweet or something similarly detached. But Rutte appears to have a bit of fellow titled Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s bravado because he called Trump out right to his face.
The two leaders (well, one leader and a toddler) were chatting with reporters at the White House on Monday when the show went down.
Endlessly out-of-touch Trump said “a lot of good things” were happening in discussions with leaders of the European Union (EU) amid the trade war of his own creation based on his concocted assessment that the U.S. was being treated “unfairly” by other countries.
“If we do work it out, that will be positive,” Trump started, before trying to pat himself on the back. “And if we don’t, it will be positive also, because —”
That’s when a shocked but smiling Rutte interjected, “No.”
“Just think about those cars that pour in here,” Trump barreled on. But Rutte didn’t let that slide.
“It’s not positive. We have to work something out,” Rutte insisted as he glanced around the room with a look of, “can you believe this guy?”
Trump met with the feisty leader of the Netherlands just after he imposed an impossibly high tariff on steel and aluminum imports from the EU, not to mention after he threatened to slap steep tariffs on all European cars.
In a twisted way, it makes sense that Trump is trying to distance himself from the alliances in place since the second world war. As he becomes the logical vessel to usher in the third over policies reminiscent of the losing forces of the last great conflict, his best recourse would be to try and destabilize the countries destined to thwart him as they did similar regimes in the past.
Too bad for Trump that he’s not an evil genius… Just a hapless nincompoop.
